Free Computer Give Away projects or Low cost computers distribution to under previledged communities.TechCane TechCane, a project of TechReuse, aims to provide technical assistance to people living with visual disabilities: the blind and visually impaired. TechCane will put 10,000 laptop computers into the hands of Canada’s blind and visually impaired community, helping over 600 thousand Canadians through the assistance of thousands of IT volunteers from across Canada over the next 5 years. Laptop donations from companies and individuals are crucial to the success of this program. The computers will provide a standardized national platform complete with adaptive software to assist low vision or blind Canadian Council of the Blind (CCB) members with various computer applications and internet connectivity. This will enable access to such services as e-mail and internet banking. We will also provide sotware and computer training to CCB members at each and every CCB chapter across Canada. Computers for new Canadians in partnership with OCISO Click here to see a video about our partnership distributions.
Since Sept 2005 - In panership with the Ottawa Community Immigrant Service Organization (OCISO), TechReuse has already distributed 1000 desktop computer systems and 100 laptops .
New Canadians are often struggling to make ends meet and this precludes acquiring a computer, and in our computer-oriented society this is a very real hurdle: students lack access to computers for schoolwork; finding work becomes even more challenging when you cannot create a resume, correspond by e-mail or research prospective jobs. Computer literacy has an impact on all of us. This partnership makes refurbished computers available to individuals and families who otherwise would not be able to afford access to technology. Tech Store Our Tech Store offers low cost computer sales to individuals at our location at 1040 Somerset St W. The computer systems have been refurbished through the efforts of our volunteers and are sold to individuals to support our charitable cause.
Our inventory includes: Desktop Computer systems (including monitor, mouse, and keyboard), Laptops, Mice, Keyboards, Monitors, Speakers, Headphones, Various cables (VGA, power cables, laptop power cables, USB, Ethernet, phone cables), Hard Drives, and other computer related equipment. This is part of our low cost computer distribution to under privileged individuals in our community. Our desktop computers start at $49 up to $199. They all come with a Microsoft operating system, word processor, excel, power point, free anti-virus software and 30 days tech support and replacement policy. This project distributed 100 personal desktop computer systems to new Canadians from Burma and other countries who had recently arrived in the Ottawa region. The purpose of this distribution was to help to bridge the digital divide and to give these new Canadian families access to the technology to assist in integrating them into Canadian society. Assisting them to pursue career opportunities, further their schooling, or to communicate with loved ones back home.
The 100 computers were refurbished at our Community Technology Center with TechMentor's volunteers. Our Techmentor volunteers trained the recipients in basic computer skills needed to set up and operate their computer. The training was a vital resource for the entire project and it was a success for the recipients allowing them to take full control of their new computers. On going computer technical support is being provided for 12 months through our community TechStore. Do you have a community need that needs to be addressed? Please contact Toe Kyi at
